
Maryland mourns the passing of its beloved former Governor William Donald Schaefer. Governor Schaefer served as MACo President in 1980 while also serving as Mayor of Baltimore City. His term of office as Mayor lasted for 16 years beginning in 1971. Governor Schaefer went on to serve as Maryland’s Governor for two terms from 1987 to 1995, and also as Comptroller for two terms from 1999 to 2007. He was defeated in 2006 in the Primary by Peter Franchot which ended his career as an elected official. The Governor will lie in state at the State House today and also at Baltimore City Hall later this afternoon and tomorrow. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
