It is with great sadness that MACo has learned of the passing of Gary Arthur, former chief of the Parks and Recreation Department in Howard County. He passed away at his home Thursday morning of cancer. See article in the Howard County Times.
Gary was an active member of MACo. He was an active participant, serving at least once as President of MACo affiliate, the Maryland Association of Parks and Recreation Directors. Gary was often called upon to testify on legislation in Annapolis on behalf of MACo and county government interests. He was a regular attendee and frequent speaker at MACo conferences through the years.
He served 31 years in the County Parks and Recreation Department, having only just resigned from his county position this March. In February, Gary drove a citizen to the hospital during a snowstorm, a testament to his devotion to public service.
Our sincere condolences are extended to his family, his Howard County friends, and county government colleagues. He will be missed.
