Charles County Commissioners Approve Local Term Limits

The Charles County Board of County Commissioners voted this week to approve a local bill that sets term limits for commissioners beginning with the term that started in December 2022. The vote followed a public hearing on Proposed Bill 2025-07.

Under the bill, a county commissioner may serve no more than two four-year terms. The limit applies whether those terms occur back-to-back or at different times. It also applies to all commissioner roles, including district seats, the president’s seat, or any combination of the two.

According to the bill, if a commissioner fills a vacancy and serves two years or more of that term, the service counts as a full term. If a commissioner wins appointment or election to fill a vacancy of less than two years, the partial service does not count toward the two-term limit.

The bill notes an exception for commissioners removed or suspended due to criminal findings related to their public duties. In those cases, service still counts toward the two-term cap.

The bill takes effect January 2, 2026.
