Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum
Located along the scenic Patuxent River and St. Leonard Creek, Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum is a 560-acre state park and home to the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. Visitors can enjoy the park’s public beaches and pier, or explore its trails that wind through more than 70 identified archaeological sites, representing over 9,000 years of human history.
On November 1, the park will host American Indian Heritage Day, a free event celebrating over 9,000 years of history and culture. The day will feature Native dancers, cultural demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.
Guests can experience hands-on learning through pottery making, soapstone bead and bowl crafting, atlatl (spear) throwing, basket weaving, and flint knapping demonstrations. Visitors can also explore a recreated Woodland Indian Village for a glimpse into daily life centuries ago.
The celebration will include performances by the Piscataway Nation Singers and Dancers, showcasing traditional songs, drums, and dances. In addition, Native artisans and vendors will offer crafts, jewelry, toys, and literature for purchase.
This engaging event offers a meaningful way to honor and recognize the contributions and enduring legacy of Native Americans, both past and present. For more details, visit Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum.
