Howard County Steps Up Support for Federal Workers During Shutdown

With federal paychecks on hold, Howard County is mobilizing a full range of local supports — from housing and food assistance to community and workforce resources — for affected workers.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced new measures to support residents affected by the ongoing federal government shutdown. Joined by US Representative Sarah Elfreth and county officials, County Executive Ball outlined a coordinated response to help federal workers and contractors facing missed paychecks.

The County expanded its Foreclosure Prevention Program earlier this year, using $1 million from the Housing Opportunities Trust Fund to assist residents in bringing their mortgages up to date and avoiding foreclosure. The program now allows applications after two missed payments and has already helped dozens of households stay in their homes.

“Once again, millions of Americans are facing the unnecessary uncertainty and the stress of living without a paycheck,” said County Executive Ball.

“To help our neighbors during this challenging time, we are going to do what we do best — lead with love,” County Executive Ball said. “We remain committed to providing measurable support to help our residents through these unprecedented times.”

Howard County will also suspend water shutoffs for affected residents and connect those in need with health, housing, and human services through the Department of Community Resources and Services.

Families impacted by the shutdown can apply for free or reduced-price school meals through the Howard County Public School System. The Community Action Council of Howard County is also providing groceries twice a month to federal employees and recently terminated contractors living in the County.

BGE has announced flexible payment arrangements and late-fee waivers for impacted customers, and the Department of Recreation & Parks will allow deferred payments for classes and facility access.

Additional resources include financial workshops hosted by the Howard County Library System, a small business resource expo led by the Howard County Economic Development Authority, and workforce assistance through the County’s Office of Workforce Development.
