St. Mary’s Transit System Goes Fare-Free Starting July 1

St. Mary’s County will eliminate all transit fares, expanding access to public transportation and advancing local goals around equity, mobility, and economic opportunity.

Beginning July 1, 2025, the St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) will eliminate all passenger fares for public routes and paratransit services.

Approved by the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County in the fiscal 2026 budget, the fare-free program will remain in place for at least one year.

By removing fares, STS aims to increase ridership, reduce financial barriers, and expand opportunities for residents across the County. The initiative also supports broader goals around sustainability, equity, and local economic access.

“Fare-free public transit can transform lives by making transportation more accessible for everyone, regardless of income,” said Allison Swint, deputy director of the Department of Public Works & Transportation. “We are excited to see how fare-free service can connect our community and create new opportunities for residents and visitors alike.”

“This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting mobility, equity, and economic growth in St. Mary’s County,” said Commissioner President Randy Guy. “We’re eager to see the positive impact this investment will have in the community.”

The County will evaluate the effects of the fare-free service over the coming year, including ridership trends and community response.
