Fun Fact: From Soil to Soul, This Maryland County’s Fresh Journey Into Community Gardening!

Kent Island in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland is celebrating the launch of its new Community Garden with an open house event. Recently relocated from its previous site, the garden now has a fresh start in its new home on Kent Island, inviting residents to explore, connect, and grow together.

The Kent Island Community Garden in Queen Anne’s County is hosting an open house on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. For the past decade, the garden was located in the Harbor View neighborhood of Chester, next to Galilee Lutheran Church. However, after the church sold the property, the garden was forced to relocate. Last summer, members of the garden turned to the County Commissioners for assistance in securing a new home.

Now settled in its new location next to the Fire Marshal’s Office, the community garden features 18 vegetable beds with room to expand to 26. It also includes three educational beds focused on pollinators, herbs, and flowers. The site was chosen for its ample space, access to utilities, and its convenient proximity to the Cross-Island Trail, nearby schools, and the public library.

Importantly, this new location is the only handicap-accessible community garden in the county, ensuring an inclusive and welcoming environment for all visitors and volunteers. The garden’s relocation reflects a continued commitment to serving the needs of Queen Anne’s County residents.

We are a diverse and unique group of twenty gardeners and are the only community garden in Queen Anne’s County that is open to all.” – John McKnight, Community Garden representative.
