Meet Dorchester’s New County Health Officer

The Dorchester County Council has announced its recommendation and appointment of Dr. Casey Scott as the county’s Health Officer, following Roger Harrell’s retirement.

Dr. Scott brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role. With over 11 years in the public health field, Dr. Scott has worked in various capacities, including her tenure with the Dorchester County Health Department as Deputy Health Officer and Medical Director. Her leadership has been instrumental in advancing key health initiatives. Dr. Scott is board certified in Family Medicine, a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine, and a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer.

From the press release:

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Casey Scott as Dorchester County’s Health Officer. Her proven track record of improving public health and fostering collaboration makes her an ideal fit to lead our efforts in enhancing health services and policies for the community”, said Lenny Pfeffer, President of the Dorchester County Council. “We are confident that her leadership will be pivotal in navigating the evolving health challenges we face.”

“I am excited and honored to represent Dorchester County as the health officer. I care deeply about this community and am looking forward to working collaboratively with our partners and citizens to improve health outcomes,“ said Scott.

At the heart of local government, roles like the County Health Officer exemplify how localized leadership directly impacts public well-being—from disease prevention and emergency response to ensuring access to vital services like immunizations, maternal health programs, and environmental safety.

Appointments to these key positions aren’t just administrative changes; they reflect a community’s priorities and readiness to tackle evolving challenges, whether pandemic recovery, addiction crises, or health equity gaps. In counties like Dorchester, where resources and trust are built neighbor by neighbor, these leaders bridge the gap between policy and people, turning statewide initiatives into tangible action.
