New Leadership to Drive Baltimore’s Future in Transportation & Urban Planning

Baltimore City is embarking on a new chapter in urban development with the appointment of two dynamic leaders: Veronica P. McBeth as the Director of the Department of Transportation and Jon Laria as the Planning Commission Chair.

Sworn in during a special ceremony at City Hall on February 20, 2025, both leaders bring extensive experience and a shared commitment to transforming the city into a more connected, equitable, and sustainable place.

Director McBeth has decades of experience shaping transportation policy at city, state, and federal levels, including a presidential appointment to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Transportation plays a central role in connecting communities to work, education, and opportunities which directly impact economic growth and community development. Director McBeth’s leadership will be key to creating a more connected, safer, and equitable transportation system in Baltimore City.

Transportation is one of the most powerful tools we have to create opportunity, connect communities, and build a stronger Baltimore. Veronica understands the unique transportation needs of our city and has the experience to make lasting, positive change. – Mayor Brandon M. Scott, County Press Release

Similarly, Chair Laria brings extensive expertise in urban planning, including serving as the Chair of the Baltimore Regional Transit Commission. Chair Laria has a history of advocating for equitable and sustainable growth through transit and planning initiatives which will serve him well in planning for a more accessible and connected Baltimore City.

I have no doubt that the Planning Commission will help shape a Baltimore that is more inclusive, sustainable, and forward-thinking under Jon’s leadership. – Mayor Scott, County Press Release

With McBeth’s innovative approach to transportation and Laria’s expertise in urban planning, Baltimore City is poised to tackle its most pressing challenges and create lasting opportunities for all residents.
