MACo Mourns Passing of Former President Murray Levy

Former Charles County Commissioner President Murray D. Levy, who served as MACo President in 1999 and afterward in the Maryland House of Delegates, died last week in South Carolina.

Commissioner Levy served from 1986 to 2004 as a Commissioner in Charles County, assuming the role as Commissioner President in 1994 and serving until he left county office in 2004. Later, as a member of the House of Delegates, he served on the Appropriations Committee, and quickly gained stature as a fiscal leader on that body.

A professional accountant, small business owner, and U.S. Army veteran, Levy served for years as Chair of MACo’s Tax & Finance Subcommittee, and frequently testified in Annapolis on matters affecting counties, especially fiscal affairs. In 2010, MACo awarded Levy its highest member honor, the Marilyn J. Praisner Public Service Award – a recognition of his many years in county service and contributions to MACo.

From David Bliden, MACo Executive Director during Levy’s presidential tenure (and the annual county visits that year):

Murray was not only a talented public servant, but was also blessed with a great sense of humor. While he was MACo President, we traveled together, visiting every county seat. It was such a joy being with him for those journeys.

“Murray Levy was the ‘everywhere’ person with MACo,” said current Executive Director Michael Sanderson, “he wanted to be engaged and helpful everywhere he could, and he left a great mark in his county, with his colleagues around the state, and with MACo as an institution.”

From the online site Legacy.com:

A man of intellect, humor and integrity, Murray chose a life of service for the people of Charles County, Maryland.
