Denver’s New Chief Data Officer Charts a Data-Driven Future

Denver’s new Chief Data Officer, Sean Greer, brings nearly two decades of IT experience and focuses on leveraging data to enhance local government services.

Greer is the Chief Data Officer for the city and county of Denver. “Knowledge is power. And data essentially can be translated into knowledge and intelligence, and with that intelligence, we’re going to be able to make better informed decisions on how we operate city services, but also where we apply those to these services to make the biggest impact,” said Sean Greer.

Previously, he served as IT Director of Service Delivery and held roles at Denver International Airport. One of his standout achievements is spearheading Denver’s Automation Center of Excellence, a program that leverages intelligent automation tools to optimize operations, including call centers and security services. This initiative has already saved the city $2.9 million and 54,000 staff hours. Notable projects like the Denver Snow Angels program, which uses automation and GIS data to match residents needing snow removal assistance with local volunteers, demonstrate the practical benefits of such efforts.

As the new Chief Data Officer, Greer plans to meet with all of Denver’s local agencies to understand their unique challenges and align data strategies with their goals.

“So the key will be having a collaborative approach with all of those different agencies and understanding what their business goals, objectives and strategies are, and then partnering that with how we can help them from a data perspective to meet those objectives. But the most important thing is, the data can’t become valuable until it’s addressing an actual strategy or need that those agencies have,” said Sean Greer.

By prioritizing collaboration, ensuring data quality, and leveraging emerging technologies like AI, he aims to make a tangible difference in residents’ lives.
