The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) has launched the Maryland Cannabis Public Health Data Dashboard.
The dashboard is designed to monitor and visualize cannabis-related public health trends. This tool provides a user-friendly and comprehensive view of cannabis-related trends, enabling policymakers, public health professionals, and residents to better understand the implications of adult-use cannabis legalization. The dashboard tracks key indicators such as:
- Emergency department visits
- Youth and adult cannabis use
- Calls to Maryland and D.C. Poison Centers
- Utilization of substance use services
It enables data analysis by jurisdiction, age, race, ethnicity, and gender to support targeted public health responses and identify health disparities.
Key findings include:
- Cannabis use among Maryland youth was declining before adult-use legalization on July 1, 2023, but adult usage rose slightly (9% in 2021 to 11.7% in 2022).
- Emergency department visits for cannabis-related issues surged by 44% (2022-2023), particularly among adults aged 20-29.
- Poison center calls nearly doubled among children under nine and tripled for those aged 10-14 during the same period.
This dashboard complements the Maryland Cannabis Administration’s Medical and Adult-Use Cannabis Data Dashboard, providing a broader understanding of public health and safety impacts. The Department also promotes the BeCannabisSmart campaign for public education.
