Feds Launch Campaign To Promote Maternal Mental Health

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has launched a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline: 1-833-TLC-MAMA.

Mental health conditions are the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the US, yet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 80% of these deaths are preventable. Recognizing this urgent issue, the federal government launched the hotline in 2022 as part of a broader strategy to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce disparities. Maternal mental health is a critical aspect of overall public health. County health departments play a significant role in outreach, education, and connecting residents to resources like this hotline.

This confidential, free hotline is available 24/7, offering emotional support, connections to local resources, and referrals to health professionals. Counselors, including licensed healthcare professionals and certified educators, provide services in English, Spanish, and over 60 other languages via call or text.

From the press release:

“In just two years, we’ve seen how the Maternal Mental Health Hotline has been a positive and productive resource for thousands of new parents. Today we’re building on those efforts through a targeted campaign to reach even more moms and let them know there is help and support during even the hardest of times,” said Secretary  Becerra of the Department of Health and Human Services
