Feds Announce Guidance To Promote Inclusive Hiring

The U.S. Department of Labor has launched the AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework, a new resource aimed at helping employers implement artificial intelligence (AI) in hiring practices inclusively and responsibly.

As the use of AI in recruitment continues to grow, employers of all types face both opportunities and challenges to ensure that these technologies promote, rather than hinder, inclusive hiring. The U.S. Department of Labor has released the hiring framework, a practical tool designed to help organizations adopt AI responsibly while reducing the risk of discrimination, especially against job seekers with disabilities. This initiative, developed by the Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), seeks to reduce discrimination risks and enhance opportunities for disabled job seekers.

The framework is informed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework and includes best practices for inclusive hiring. It features ten focus areas that guide employers in adopting effective AI governance strategies. Each area provides insights into maximizing benefits and managing risks associated with AI hiring technologies.

From the press release:

“These employers recognize that AI tools can improve recruitment and hiring but may also impact workplace culture and inclusion of disabled employees. The AI & Inclusive Hiring Framework published today charts a clear course for employers to navigate this transformation successfully,” said Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Taryn Williams.

As AI transforms hiring practices, local governments can lead inclusive recruitment by adopting best practices from the U.S. Department of Labor.
