Somerset County Expands Digital Horizon

Somerset County receives close to $2 million in funding to expand broadband access.

Maryland has allocated almost $2 million to extend high-speed internet access to Smith Island. This grant, managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Office of Statewide Broadband, aims to connect over 200 businesses and households in Somerset County. By investing in infrastructure, counties will enhance economic development in their communities, ensuring more reliable internet access for both businesses and households.

From the story:

“This broadband initiative, in partnership with the state and county, is truly a showcase in fostering potential economic growth and regional accessibility for local businesses on Smith Island” – Danny Thompson, executive director of Somerset County Economic Development

The grant permits up to 90 percent of the funds to be used for capital construction costs. The project is a collaborative effort involving Somerset County, Smith Island United, and Verizon. The new broadband infrastructure will provide connectivity levels comparable to those in major urban areas. This advancement will significantly strengthen various facets of daily life, from education and healthcare to security systems.

Maryland Housing Secretary Jake Day underscored the state’s determined goal of providing high-speed internet to every resident by 2030:

“To close Maryland’s digital divide and open pathways to opportunity, all Maryland households and businesses must have access to broadband internet, no matter how remote the location.” – Secretary Jake Day

By ensuring that all residents and businesses, regardless of location, have access to high-speed internet, the state is paving the way for a more connected and economically vibrant future.
