SDAT Names New Associate Director

The Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) announced Maria Mathias’s appointment as the new associate director.

“We are thrilled to have Maria step into the role of Associate Director,” said SDAT Director Dan Phillips. “Her extensive experience, commitment to excellence, and proven leadership will undoubtedly strengthen our department and enhance our services to the citizens of Maryland.”

In this role, Maria will work closely with Director Phillips, overseeing the daily operations of the SDAT’s divisions and developing and implementing strategic plans to improve SDAT’s efficiency and overall effectiveness.

According to SDAT:

Maria began her career with SDAT in 1988 as an Assessor in the Business Personal Property (BPP) division. Over the years, she ascended through the ranks to become the Administrator of the BPP, Utility Valuation, and Franchise Tax units.

These units collectively manage an assessable base exceeding $26 billion and collaborate closely with other Business Services units in Charter/Legal to ensure accuracy and compliance. These units collectively manage a yearly assessable base exceeding 26 billion, with Franchise Tax revenues of over $140 million. These units collaborate closely with other Business Services units in Charter/Legal to ensure accuracy and compliance.

The property tax is the largest source of local revenue for Maryland’s county governments. Counties rely on this revenue to fund schools, public safety, infrastructure, public health, and other essential services.

SDAT is responsible for assessing property in Maryland. Assessments conducted by the State, rather than the local governments, help assure taxpayers that the assessing body provides objective, unbiased analysis.

Maryland divides more than two million property accounts into three groups, each appraised by SDAT once every three years. There are 24 local state assessment offices, one in each county and one in Baltimore City.
