Fun Fact: Which Maryland County has the Largest Naturally Formed and Maintained Cave in the World?

Crystal Grottoes Caverns in Washington County, Maryland, is celebrated as the world’s most naturally preserved cave. It features the highest number of formations per square foot of any cave.

The cave was discovered in 1920 during quarry operations for road material. Drills created passages near the current entrance, and an opening was created through blasting. Due to their beauty and commercial potential, the caverns were preserved during the quarrying process. In 1922, after clearing and installing electrical equipment, the caverns were opened to the public for only 7 cents a ticket. Ralph Downs, the original owner wanted to create a place for people to visit for generations to come.

Visitors can enjoy the cool 54-degree caves year-round and learn about their rich history through guided tours. Since its founding in 1920, many additions have been made to accommodate the needs of Crystal Grottoes and its numerous annual visitors.

Three generations later, visitors to the Crystal Grottoes Caverns in Washington County can still explore the natural beauty of the cave.
