New Legislation Prompts Numerous Studies by the Maryland Department of Health

Work gets underway for thirteen new reports required of the Maryland Department of Health before the end of the year.

According to a recent Maryland Matters article, the Office of Innovation, Research, and Development in the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) has thirteen new studies this year that were prompted by recent legislation. These studies cover a number of different health topics and are due by the end of the year. Access to substantial new research and data can have legislative repercussions for the 2025 session when the studies are finalized.

From the article:

“A lot of those bills that ended up passing did have a lot of reports as their main components,” Chris Coats, a health policy analyst with the Maryland Department of Health, said Thursday. “So there’s going to be a lot of follow-up after the session, during the interim this year and as we get ready for next year.”

In addition to the Maryland Matters article, previous Conduit Street coverage highlighted another required study from the Maryland Department of Health – in conjunction with the Department of Budget and Management – reporting on how the required local health department matching funds are calculated. Language in the operating budget bill, SB 360, clarified this requirement as well as the Joint Chairman’s Report.
