Grants Allow Urban Renewal in Charles County

The Charles County Planning Commission is spearheading an ambitious plan to transform the Waldorf Urban Redevelopment Corridor into a vibrant, high-density, and walkable center centered around public transit.

The vision, split into the Waldorf Central Zone and the Acton Urban Center Zone, aims to revitalize the area with the Southern Maryland Rapid Transit (SMRT) Project running light rail along the development, connecting key locations like Leonardtown Road and Acton Lane.

A key focus of this redevelopment is enhancing pedestrian connectivity and safety while improving the overall aesthetic of the area. Thanks to significant grants, including a $175,000 grant from the Maryland Economic Development Fund, projects like the Streetscape Improvement Project are already underway. This project aims to create more pathways, crosswalks, and bump-outs along Old Washington Road, crucial components for enhancing the area’s walkability and attractiveness.

Another exciting development is the infusion of public art into the corridor. A $10,000 grant from Public Art Across Maryland has kickstarted a project at the Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center, showcasing the community’s commitment to cultural enrichment and creativity.

These efforts highlight Charles County’s dedication to revitalizing its urban areas and creating dynamic spaces for its residents. While the redevelopment is a long-term goal, these short-term initiatives demonstrate tangible progress and a commitment to transforming the corridor.
