Counties Back Establishment of Vision Zero Advisory Commission in Effort to Reduce Vehicle-Related Deaths

On February 8, 2024, Associate Policy Director Sarah Sample testified before the House Environment and Transportation Committee in support of HB 344- Transportation- Vision Zero Advisory Commission- Establishment. This bill establishes the Vision Zero Advisory Commission to reduce the number of vehicle-related deaths by developing strategies that make roadways safer for all residents regardless of transportation mode.

Counties make substantial investments in Vision Zero projects. These initiatives are cross-departmental and often across jurisdictions, requiring extensive collaboration and coordination. This bill appreciates that complexity and counties are ready to enthusiastically engage on the commission.

From MACo Testimony:

Counties recognize and appreciate the inclusion of local officials and experts on the Commission established by HB 344 and look forward to engaging productively. Making roadways safer for vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and more will bring about greater transportation equity and mobility access for all residents.

HB 344’s cross-file, SB 345, was heard on February 13, 2024 in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Sarah Sample submitted written testimony in support of this bill.

SB 345 was heard in the opposite chamber, the House Environment and Transportation Committee, on March 27. MACo submitted testimony in support.
