The Montgomery County Council has announced a new vision for economic development and new targets for housing.

The proposals are intended to help bring businesses and opportunities to the county while addressing the infrastructure and housing needs for the county’s growing population.

The County Council rolled out a comprehensive plan to lure businesses back to the Maryland suburb Tuesday, outlining several broad focus areas for lawmakers over the coming months: transportation, housing, workforce development and business development. The council’s various committees plan to work up proposals on improving the county’s prospects on each issue and deliver recommendations for policy changes by February 2020.

The County Council unanimously approved new housing targets Tuesday, pledging to beat the current projections for new homebuilding by at least 10,000 units during the next 10 years. That would require the county, in concert with the cities of Rockville and Gaithersburg, to allow the construction of about 41,000 homes through 2030.

The move comes just two months after officials at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (which includes Montgomery County) crafted a regional goal of building 325,000 new homes in the next decade.
