Creating More Equitable Policies for an Economically Vibrant Maryland

DESCRIPTION:
In America, policymakers have always used a racial lens, either explicitly or implicitly. Use of a “Racial Equity Lens” in policy has positive impacts on effectiveness, societal trust, and outcomes.
We will begin the day exploring, with representatives from Associated Black Charities and a member of the Maryland General Assembly, an “Overview of Racial Lens in Policy / How More Impactful Policy is Created,” including a summary of how policy has been racialized; the impact of “targeted universalism” in policy; and the gains from using a Racial Equity Lens. After a short break, we will continue with representatives from the Maryland Center on Economic Policy for a presentation and discussion regarding the economic impact of applying a Racial Equity Lens to state and county fiscal decisions. After another short break, we will do a deep dive into the human impact of hunger using a racial equity lens, with presenters from Maryland Hunger Solutions.
The latter part of the day will be spent hearing from legislator and administrator representatives from rural and urban counties as they share their experiences in bringing a Racial Equity Lens to policy – and in hearing about YOUR experiences and questions.
OBJECTIVES:
This event will focus on supporting policymakers in the following ways:
- Understanding the need for and benefits of using a racial equity lens in creating more equitable policies for Maryland;
- Authentically engaging with communities (keeping connection above newsletters and fundraising requests while still having a life. . .) and communities that have been historically marginalized;
- Policy budgeting using a Racial Equity Frame; and
- Highlighting County “Best Practices” in the areas of using a racial equity lens in policymaking; authentically.
