Farmers across Cecil County recently participated in the 2019 Agricultural Tire Collection Event held at the Cecil County Central Landfill in Elkton. The event aims to collect scrap tires from Cecil County farms at no cost to the farmers.

This year, more than 14,000 tires, weighing more than 379 tons, were collected March 1st-11th, with 73 different farms contributing.

The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), in conjunction with the Maryland Environmental Service and the Maryland Farm Bureau, Inc., hosts Scrap Tire Drop-Off Day events which allow farmers to deliver agricultural scrap tires to approved collection locations throughout the state free of charge. This year, four counties in Maryland are participating in the program: Cecil, Carroll, Frederick, and Harford.

According to a press release:

“This is a wonderful program for voting members of the Farm Bureau to participate in,” said Councilman Al Miller. “It assists the farmers in Cecil County tremendously, but also cuts down on excess waste and environmental hazards.”

“The Agricultural Scrap Tire Collection is a very worthwhile, collaborative event that not only benefits our farmers, but also aids in the proper disposal of scrap tires,” added County Executive Alan McCarthy. “That’s 14,000 tires that can now possibly be repurposed into reusable items, which ultimately, is a great benefit to our citizens, farmers, water ways and surrounding areas.”
