Frederick County’s Child Advocacy Center received a grant to participate in the “Handle With Care Maryland” program under the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention.
The program creates a process for first responders to alert and work with school systems in cases where a child may have witnessed or experienced a traumatic event or ACES (adverse childhood experience).
As reported in the Frederick News-Post:
Now, when a child witnesses a traumatic event, such as the arrest of a parent or an overdose, law enforcement or emergency medical personnel can alert the school system.

Handle With Care targets schools because they are one place where most children will go and an ideal location to provide further support or a safety net, Assistant Superintendent Mike Markoe said.
