Smart Traffic Signals Coming To SHA Corridors

Yesterday, Governor Larry Hogan announced a $50 million plan to install Smart Traffic Signals along major regional corridors throughout the state. The signals use artificial intelligence to adjust signal phasing according to traffic conditions.

The Governor said in his statement:

By replacing 20-year-old existing controls with Smart Traffic Signals, we will have the ability to respond to changes in traffic flow, as well as traffic conditions immediately – benefiting nearly 700,000 Maryland citizens across the state.

Traffic engineers will select intersections to upgrade with the Smart Traffic Signals based on traffic volumes, intersection capacity, and traffic patterns. Preliminary results from a pilot study of the traffic  signals along MD 24 between Singer Road and Boulton Street indicated a travel time reduction of 13 percent for approximately 40,000 daily riders.
