A Cumberland-Times News article (2017-07-23) reported that Maryland Delegate Michael “Mike” McKay (R, District 1C) will not run for a second term and instead run for the position of Allegany County Register of Wills. McKay represents portions of Allegany and Washington Counties and is a former Allegany County Commissioner. He was active in MACo. The current register of wills, Rebecca Drew, was recently indicted on fraud charges concerning the use of an office credit card with a court hearing scheduled for August 23. From the article:

McKay said regardless of the outcome of Drew’s legal issues, he intends to announce his candidacy in the near future.

“I’m defintely interested and I’m planning on making an announcement to run for that office in September,” he said. “In lieu of what is happening, we have to see how it will play out. If she clears her name she may run against me.”

McKay said travel to Annapolis required by his duties as delegate has become a challenge.

“The biggest thing, I’ve got eight kids … five are in elementary school,” he said. “We’ve adjusted to me being in Annapolis, but when you can be at home in Allegany County 12 months a year … it’s a good fit for my family.” …

“I can still help people out [as Register of Wills],” he said. “Being a commissioner and delegate, I bring knowledge to the post. It may not be used day in and day out, but it can’t hurt.”

McKay also indicated in the article that if Drew is forced to resign from her position prior to the election, he would be willing to resign as delegate if he was to be appointed to serve out the remainder of Drew’s term. The article also reported that Cumberland City Councilman Dave Caporale will be running for the Allegany County Board of Commissioners, along with incumbent William “Bill” Valentine (R) and Green Party Candidate Michael Leptic. Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson will run for another term as sheriff.
