The Baltimore Sun recently looked at the history of names of places and things in Maryland. Here’s a look at the origin of Maryland’s county names. For example, Somerset County was established in 1666 and named for Lady Somerset, the sister of Lady Anne Arundel and Queen Anne’s County was formed in 1706 from parts of Kent and Talbot counties. It is named for Queen Anne of England, who ruled from 1702 to 1714 — when Maryland was governed as a royal colony.
