A global technology company is planning a multimillion-dollar project at its Washington County facility, according to a county building permit. An approved permit is on file for a $5 million project at Intelsat Corporation, a global networking company located south of Hagerstown.

According to Herald-Mail Media,

“The work is for a power upgrade for some antennas, and there is not much to add beyond that,” Jason Bates, media communications manager for Intelsat, wrote in a recent email message.

The project includes a 6,600-square-foot, one-story building for generator rooms with a connector to another 13,000-square-foot, one-story building, according to the permit.

The company operates a globalized network that lets “anyone connect with anyone else, anywhere on the planet,” according to the website Intelsat.com.

“The Intelsat Globalized Network combines the world’s largest satellite backbone with terrestrial infrastructure and managed services to deliver high-quality, cost-effective video and broadband services, anywhere in the world,” the website said.

“This allows our customers to profitably expand into new markets, drive new revenue streams and ensure the most secure and reliable communications possible,” it said.

The company has a fleet of more than 50 satellites, plus eight teleports “that provide the world’s most extensive and secure communications network,” the website said.

Intelsat is the “world’s leading satellite operator in terms of capacity and geographic reach.” It also is the “largest provider of satellite capacity for network services, with a 29 percent global share,” according to its website.
