Sowing the Seeds for Strong Communities

Strong families are a bedrock for strong communities. A comprehensive, holistic, and collaborative approach to supporting children and families can yield overwhelming results for the long term well-being of counties and their communities. For example, through innovative programming Baltimore City has reduced its infant mortality rate to record lows and Garrett County has pioneered a plan to help families break free of economic dependence and reach economic security.

At the MACo Winter Conference Session “Sowing the Seeds for Strong Communities” learn more about the Baltimore City B’More for Healthy Babies initiative and the Garrett County 2-Generation (2-G) program as well as the best practices counties across the state can use to develop healthy families and help their communities thrive.

Sowing the Seeds for Strong Communities

Description: A multitude of issues – abuse, addiction, crime, behavioral and learning problems — affect the well-being of children, families and entire communities. It is imperative that communities, local governments, and state entities come together to work with families and provide financial support for proven, comprehensive programs designed to address all facets of a child’s development. Strong support systems can ensure that a child enters the school system physically and mentally healthy and ready to learn. This session will discuss the components of effective community-based programs focused on developing healthy children and families and on improving population health.

  • Dr. Leana Wen, Health Commissioner, Baltimore City
