The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports that on November 6, 2013, Governor Martin O’Malley and the Board of Public Works approved funding through Program Open Space for recreational project upgrades in Calvert, Garrett, St. Mary’s, and Washington Counties. As reported by DNR:

Calvert County will receive $82,500 to develop and construct a skate park at the 89-acre Dunkirk District Park. The county will also receive $111,000 to construct restrooms and associated utilities at the 20-acre Solomons Town Center Park.

Garrett County will receive $8,000 to install fencing, a gravel walking path and parking area, and a 12- by 16-foot storage shed at the Casselman Valley soccer field complex. The project also includes park road improvements and athletic field drainage upgrades. Funds totaling $45,023 were previously approved by the Board of Public Works for this project.

St. Mary’s County will receive $125,000 to construct an approximately 5-mile section of the Three Notch hiking/biking trail from Mechanicsville to New Market.  With this addition to the existing trail, hikers and cyclists will enjoy a continuous 11-mile section of trail from beyond the county line in Charlotte Hall to Baggett Park in Laurel Grove. The county will receive $60,000 to replace the rundown flooring in the gymnasium and wellness/recreation room at the Leonard Hall Recreation Center.

Washington County’s town of Williamsport will receive $1,035 to purchase and install four bike stands at Byron Memorial Park.
