Wilson Parran was one of three people inducted into the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland’s Philanthropy Hall of Fame on November 1 for epitomizing “the best of community, leadership and philanthropy.”

Parran currently serves as Deputy Secretary of Administration and Operations for the Maryland Department of Transportation. The Calvert County resident is the only person in Maryland who has served as President of the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE), where he received the Charles E. Willis Leadership Award (2007), President of the Maryland State Board of Education (MSBE) and President of the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo), where he received the Marilyn Praisner Public Service Award in 2010. Parran in accepting the award said, “It is very important to give back.”

Parran noted he was raised on a Calvert County farm as the son of a tobacco sharecropper. But he said even in those poor conditions, “with not a lot of resources,” the community kicked in and helped people in need. During his tenure on the Calvert County Board of Education he said he was proud that they “looked at what we could do to help students be successful not only in Calvert County but outside as well.”
