The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee is expected to mark-up its budget reconciliation package this Wednesday, April 18 and is reportedly looking at the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) for savings. It is unknown at this time whether the bill will have a complete elimination of the program as proposed in the House Budget resolution or whether it will be a funding reduction. SSBG is a capped entitlement to states currently funded at $1.7 billion.
If your county receives an SSBG allocation from your state, the National Association of Counties (NACo) urges you to email your member of Congress about the importance of the program–particularly if you have a Representative on the Ways and Means Committee.
It would be particularly helpful to include examples of the services provided through the SSBG, especially to families and the elderly. One of the criticisms of SSBG is that the program is duplicative. However, SSBG is the only source of federal funds for Adult Protective Services at this moment.
