Caroline County to SHA: Take Back Our Local Roadways

In a February 16 letter to the Department of Transportation, the Caroline County Commissioners have requested that the State Highway Administration take over the management and maintenance of county roads. The Commissioners are reacting to the State’s reduction, by 95%, of the County’s statutory and formula-driven distributions of Highway User Revenues (HUR), as quoted in a county Press Release.

“Without our reasonable share of Highway User Revenues, the County would prefer to have the State be responsible for the roads, as it is responsible for the revenue loss to the County,” said County Commission President John W. Cole.

According to the Press Release, “… the ‘grab’ by the State of distributions rightfully payable to the County in order to balance the State’s own budget, has merely resulted in a pass down of yet another unfunded mandate,” said Commissioner Cole.
